Sustainable Easter Chocolate

100% of the Haigh’s made Easter Range uses UTZ Certified Cocoa

In March 2014 Haigh’s Chocolates was the first Australian-owned bean-to-bar chocolate maker to achieve international UTZ certification — for ethically and sustainably farmed cocoa beans, which includes a zero-tolerance policy towards trafficked child labour. The UTZ program enables farmers to learn better farming methods, improve working conditions and take better care of their children and the environment.

70% of the cocoa we source from around the world to use in our chocolate making comes from UTZ Certified farms and we’re working to increase that. We now have a regular, contracted supply for our UTZ products, and more information about the different regions and the farms we’re sourcing from.

Having a more reliable cocoa bean supply helps Haigh’s keep our flavours consistent and our production methods and operations run even more smoothly.

Haigh’s decision to become UTZ Certified and the decisions of our customers to support this are making a real contribution to the industry as a whole. More farmers around the world are expressing interest in the program and are wanting to become certified. We’re also looking forward to more of our supplier farmers becoming certified and are actively supporting them on their journey, this includes cocoa growers in Papua New Guinea.

Chocolate bilbies help save furry bilbies

Haigh’s proud tradition of supporting environmental causes continues this year. We've been making chocolate Bilbies since 1993 with part proceeds from the sale of the chocolate Easter Bilbies  donated to The Foundation for Rabbit Free Australia (RFA) to help protect the habitat of the Bilby.

Haigh’s Chocolates joined forces with the RFA in 1993 and began making Australia’s very first chocolate Easter Bilbies.  So much so that within years two years we made the decision to stop making chocolate Easter bunnies altogether and have since have sold over 500,000 chocolate Easter Bilbies.

Part proceeds from the sale of  our chocolate Easter Bilbies goes to the RFA and their work to protect the environment for both indigenous biodiversity and food production.

Over the years, Haigh’s have also become more involved with saving the bilby by partnering with the Adelaide Zoo.

Haigh’s are very proud to be major sponsors of the Adelaide Zoo’s purpose built bilby exhibit, which is part of the Nocturnal House. It’s a comfy open plan environment for the bilbies so you can get a peek at how they live in their natural habitat. Since the exhibit opened, many healthy baby bilbies have been born – a great success for this important breeding program and good news for the future of the species.
